Retiring Melzer d Raonic in Vienna

Austria and Switzerland are hosting ATP tournaments this week, and many of the participants are using this as a warm up for the Paris Masters 1000 the week after.

  • Erste Bank Open 500 in Vienna, Austria, on Hard Rebound Ace, (ATP 500 Category)
  • Swiss Indoors Basel in Basel, Switzerland, on Hard, Greenset, (ATP 500 Category)

ATP Vienna

Dominic Thiem is top seed, world ranked 7, and all eight seeds are in the top 15

Early first round results

  • Lucky loser Andrey Rublev defeated qualifier Denis Kudla 7-6(3) 6-0
  • Marton Fucsovics defeated wildcard Felix Auger-Aliassime 1-6 6-0 7-5
  • Borna Coric (6) defeated Albert Ramos-Viñolas 6-7(5) 6-0 6-4
  • Kevin Anderson (2) defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili 4-6 7-6(6) 6-3
  • Wildcard Jürgen Melzer, Austrian veteran at 37 years of age, was ranked 186 at the start of 2018.

He has played only on the ATP Challenger circuit, while attempting in qualifying to make the main draw of majors and a few other ATP tournaments.  His ranking has fallen to 426 as a result (at one point it was 1245, as points from 2017 had not been defended)

His first match was against Milos Raonic, and amazingly he won 7-6(6) 7-5

The former world number eight is retiring after the tournament, but his ranking at the end will be better than at the start.  It has improved to 333 at the moment.
