First round matches were completed in Shanghai, Tianjin and Hong Kong, while four openers still remain for decision in Linz after Day 3 of main draw action
Five second round matches were also played in Shanghai.
ATP Shanghai
First round
- Last weeks Japan Open winner, Daniil Medvedev, had to fight all the way to defeat Chinese wildcard, Ze Zhang, ranked 216, in a tick under two and a half hours, 3-6 7-6(7) 6-4. His reward - a testing second round encounter with Roger Federer (1), which will be the first between the pair.
- Richard Gasquet defeated Leonardo Mayer 1-6 6-2 6-1
- Kyle Edmund (11) defeated Filip Krajinovic 7-5 6-3
- Qualifier Benoit Paire defeated Pablo Carreno Busta (15) 6-3 6-4
- Alex de Minaur defeated qualifier Vasek Pospisil 6-4 7-6(4)
- Last weeks Beijing winner, Nikoloz Basilashvili, continued his stellar form with a strong victory over Denis Shapovalov 6-2 6-2
- Qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin defeated Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-4 6-2
- Hyeon Chung defeated qualifier Hubert Hurkacz 6-4 2-6 6-1
Second round
- Borna Coric (13) defeated qualifier Bradley Klahn 6-4 6-2
- Peter Gojowczyk defeated Marton Fucsovics 6-4 6-7(3) 7-6(5)
- Matthew Ebden upset Dominic Thiem (6) in a thriller 6-4 6-7(8) 7-6(4), in two hours forty five minutes, saving six of nine break points, and delivering 14 aces. Thiem’s poor record in China continues - 3 wins, eight losses, and never making it past the second round in Shanghai.
It was Ebden’s third career win over a top ten player, and his biggest, bettering his previous victory over world number eight Mardy Fish in the third round of Indian Wells 2012.
To make the quarter finals, and replicate his 2011 effort here in Shanghai, Ebden will have to defeat Peter Gojowczyk in the round of sixteen, and he defeated the German player in their only meeting in Newport 2017. Ebden eventually was runner-up to John Isner in Newport, his first career ATP tour final, and only one to date.
- Nicolás Jarry dismissed another seed, Marin Cilic (5), 2-6 7-6(6) 7-5, saving two match points for his biggest ever win. The second of the match points was when Cilic served at 6-5 in the second set tie break, and made a mess of a backhand.
Cilic lost in Tokyo last week in the second round, also wasting chances when serving for the match (twice)
For Jarry, this his second career win over a top ten player, and only his second match win at a Masters 1000 tournament.
- Novak Djokovic (2) defeated Jérémy Chardy 6-3 7-5, without facing a break point, and winning 34 of 40 points on his first serve. A smooth start to his current campaign.
