Venus and Coco follow the Sloane exit

On court eight Pablo Carreno Busta (10) took the first set off Aussie wildcard Jason Kubler, ranked 334.

It was close, 7-5, but set two was a surprise, Kubler actually levelling the match with a 6-4 set win.

Belinda Bencic was a break up on Venus Williams 4-3 with serve to come in the first set.

Jelena Ostapenko has defeated Francesca in straight sets.

Other winners include:

Julia Goerges over Sofia Kenin

Magdaléna Rybáriková over Taylor Townsend

Ying-Ying Duan over Mariana Duque-Marino

Mona Barthel over Monica Niculescu

Alize Cornet over Xinyu Wang

Alexandr Dolgopolov over Andreas Haider-Maurer

Petra Martic over Alison Van Uytvanck

After a short rain break, Kubler held serve to lead 2-1 in the third set and took Carreno Busta to deuce.

Two clean winners brought up break point for the Aussie and he took the chance for a 3-1 lead.

The tenth seed was showing frustration, but a double fault left Kubler at 30-30. A lovely Australian backhand and a Spanish error saw the scoreboard tick over to 4-1.

Meanwhile Bencic took the first set from Venus Williams 6-3.

And Dominika Cibulkova (24) lost her opening set to Kaia Kanepi 6-2.

Pablo held serve and Kubler’s lead was cut to 4-2 - serious pressure was put on the Queenslander’s serve, Pablo using the second of two break chances to bring the set back to 3-4 with Spanish delivery next.

Having drawn level, Pablo failed to seize on a double fault from Kubler and the Aussie led 5-4, and teasingly just a game away from a two sets to one lead.

An ace from the Spaniard silenced a previous point from Kubler full of great shots.

A wicked Queensland backhand took it to deuce.

Pablo closed it out with big serves and 5-5.

After saving a few break points, Kubler fell to the Pablo pressure and trailed 5-6. The tenth seed would serve for the set.

The set was taken with an easy hold and Pablo led 7-5 4-6 7-5.

Kirsten Flipkens has defeated Alison Riske

Irina-Camelia Begu has defeated Ekaterina Makarova (31) 8-6 in the third

Pablo Cuevas (31) has defeated Mikhail Youzhny

Denis Istomin (who tossed out Djokovic last year) has defeated Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

Kaia Kanepi has thrashed Dominika Cibulkova 6-2 6-2

Pablo Carreno Busta has taken complete control of his match with Jason Kubler, now leading 3-0 in the fourth set.

Coco Vandeweghe (10) has lost her first set in a shock against Timea Babos, so not the best start for American women.

Well it took Belinda to break the Williams serve to win 6-3 7-5, the only sets she has ever taken off the 2017 finalist.

Sloane Stephens (13) and Venus Williams (5) and Coco Vandeweghe (10) gone on Day One.
