Barty wins in three over Giorgi

Ash Barty (18) was the crowd favourite in the first night match on the fourth day on RLA.

She could expect another tough match against Italian Camila Giorgi whose form of late was near career best.

The first three games went to serve, Ash losing only one point on her serve, that being through a double fault.

Giorgi hit clean winners for 40-15 but Barty brought it back to deuce.

A big serve was nullified by a netted ground stroke and a second deuce arrived.

Upon a third deuce Giorgi managed to win the final two points to level at 2-2.

Juan Martin del Potro (12) defeated Karen Khachanov 6-4 7-6(4) 6-7(7) 6-4.

Julien Benneteau upset yet another seed David Goffin (7) 1-6 7-6(5) 6-1 7-6(4).

Naomi Osaka defeated Elena Vesnina (16) 7-6(4) 6-2.

Hyeon Chung defeated Daniil Medvedev 7-6(4) 6-1 6-1.

Barty was broken to love in the seventh game and trailed 3-4.

Two netted shots from Barty were replied by one from Giorgi for 30-30 but an off forehand hit by the Italian brought up game point.

Ash saved it and a second.

Two wayward forehands by Barty and Giorgi was one game away from the first set.

Barty held and asked Giorgi to serve for it at 5-4.  

Giorgi’s first double fault of the match gave Barty a break point and she won the game for 5-5.

A poor finish to her service game saw Barty facing a set loss again - 6-5 Giorgi.

A sizzling Italian forehand and 30-15.

Two set points saved, but not the third and Barty would have to come from a set down for the second match in a row.

Ash had struggled on serve all match but held in the second set and broke surprisingly in the fourth game, only for Giorgi to break straight back and hold next game for 3-3.

Simona Halep (1) defeated Eugenie Bouchard 6-2 6-2.

Richard Gasquet (29) defeated Lorenzo Sonego 6-2 6-2 6-3.

Two forehand winners gave Ash the break and the lead 5-3.

However two forehand winners from Giorgi and Ash was in trouble at 0-30. Worse at 15-40 and two break points. One saved with an ace, but serve broken and Giorgi back in it at 4-5.

0-40 and three set points for Barty. Two saved with forehand winners, but the third was converted by Barty and she levelled at 5-7 6-4.

Barty won the first game of set three and the first point on Giorgi’s serve with a backhand winner. Giorgi replied with an ace.

A Barty winner on the first of two break points gave her a 2-0 lead.

A pair of aces assisted the Aussie to hold serve and consolidate the break, leading 3-0.

A break point was saved by Camila in the fourth game. but not the second and Ash now led 4-0 with serve to come.

5-0 and lots of Italian errors flowing now.

Giorgi serving to stay in the match. She held serve and Barty would serve for the third round.

Three aces and a winning forehand took Barty through to a meeting with Naomi Osaka 5-7 6-4 6-1.
