Aussie Matt Ebden ousts Isner

Matt Ebden is one Australian who is doing his nation proud in his match against American sixteenth seed John Isner.

Never having taken a set off the big serving Isner, Ebden continued his bright summer by grabbing the opening set 6-4.

Isner struck back in set two with his usual game on display and the battle was even 4-6 6-3.

It was then Ebden’s turn to fire and he led two sets to one 6-4 3-6 6-3.

Straight away in the fourth, Ebden managed to break the Isner serve.

Two aces helped consolidate the break and saving break points in the fourth game was vital. 3-1 and ever closer to a quality win.

Ebden was a mere spectator as Isner calmly blasted three aces to close up at 2-3.

However he replied with a love game without the need for an ace and led 4-2.

A double fault from Isner and 0-30. Big serving assisted him holding on and Ebden still had pressure to win this.

Kyle Edmund came from two sets to one down and defeated Kevin Anderson (11).

Wildcard Australian Alex Bolt, ranked 188, took the first two sets off Viktor Troicki, the first in a tie break, the second 6-4.

Ebden held serve confidently and was only a game away from ousting another American.

Two aces were out numbered by four errors from Isner and Matthew Ebden won the break and the match 6-4 3-6 6-3 6-3.

Remarkably Ebden was ranked 699 this time last year.

He is now number 78 and hoping to better his career high of 61 achieved four years ago.
