The two previous matches between Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut and Argentina’s Guido Pella were decided in Roberto’s favour, the most recent in Munich this year.
Guido served first and was immediately broken. That break advantage was maintained through to 4-3, with break points saved by both players - one by Roberto in game four, and three by Guido in game five.
Two lengthy service games followed. A fifteen pointer saw Roberto slip to 0-40 when attempting to serve for a 5-3 lead. He saved all the three break points plus another two he faced later in the game. A couple of game points arrived but vanished and Guido broke back on his sixth chance.
The ninth game lasted seventeen points, included six deuces, and four break chances created for Roberto. None were taken and Guido took the lead for the first time 5-4.
Serving to stay in the set, Roberto delivered a love game, and then, after trailing 30-15, won three points straight to break Guido. A second love game on serve sealed the opening set for Spain 7-5.
As in set one, Roberto broke the Guido serve in the opening game of set two. Thereafter, nothing bothered the serve of either player apart from in the fourth game when Roberto needed to stave off a single break point. Apart from that moment, deuce was never visited, and Roberto went to the line at 5-4 to serve it out. He did, converting the second of a pair of set points. The lead was 7-5 6-4.
Set three saw Guido taken to deuce, but this time he managed to hold serve in the opening game. Breaking Roberto for the loss of a single point, and consolidating with a love game, Guido was in a solid 3-0 position. This became 5-2, the hurdle of a seventh game break point having been cleared.
Guido failed to take advantage of two set points when Roberto served at 2-5, and when serving himself for the set had to negotiate a break point before winning 6-3.
Game three of set four saw two break points come and go, and Roberto held serve. Guido also faced two break points in game four, but could only save one, and Roberto led 3-1. Winning twelve of fifteen points on his serve for the remainder of the match, the Spaniard could not be caught.
Roberto Bautista Agut won 7-5 6-4 3-6 6-4, and reached the Wimbledon semi finals.
Before this year, Bautista Agut had never been past the round of sixteen at any major. In 2019 he has made the quarters at the Australian Open and the final four here, his best performance at a Grand Slam tournament.
