2019 Wimbledon - Day One Exits

Novak Djokovic began his 2018 Wimbledon title defence with a decisive straight sets victory over Philipp Kohlschreiber. His semi final victim from last year, Kevin Anderson, also opened impressively, brushing Pierre-Hugues Herbert aside for the loss of just nine games. Djokovic and Anderson are drawn to meet again this year in the semis, and their respective tasks have been made significantly easier on Day One.

Stefanos Tsitsipas, seventh seed, and drawn to meet Djokovic in a quarter final, was ousted in five sets by Italian Thomas Fabbiano, and Alexander Zverev, sixth seed, drawn to meet Anderson in the quarters, lost to Jiri Vesely in four sets.
Additionally, Gael Monfils, the sixteenth seed, was forced to retire in his opening match, and he was the scheduled round of sixteen opponent for Djokovic.

Other results for the men’s seeds:

Dusan Lajovic (32) lost to Hubert Hurkacz

Felix Auger-Aliassime (19) defeated Vasek Pospisil
Daniil Medvedev (11) defeated Paolo Lorenzi
David Goffin (21) defeated Bradley Klahn

Karen Khachanov (10) defeated Soonwoo Kwon
Roberto Bautista Agut (23) defeated Peter Gojowczyk
Benoit Paire (28) defeated Juan Ignacio Londero

Upsets weren’t limited to the men. The bottom half of the women’s draw was already friendly fodder for the likes of Karolina Pliskova (3) and Simona Halep (7).
With the dramatic first round losses of Naomi Osaka (2) to Yulia Putintseva in straight sets, and Aryna Sabalenka (10) to Magdaléna Rybáriková in just over an hour, finals appear closer now for Pliskova and Halep who defeated Zhu Lin and Aliaksandra Sasnovich respectively.
Roland Garros finalist Marketa Vondrousova (16) found grass more difficult to negotiate than clay and succumbed to Madison Brengle.  The prospective round of sixteen opponent for Pliskova disappeared accordingly.
