HOW ROGER FEDERER COULD FINISH 2018 WORLD #1
With Rafa Nadal withdrawing from Paris, Novak Djokovic should finish the year as number one.
However Roger Federer could upset the apple cart IF:
- Nadal doesn’t play the ATP Finals
- Federer wins both the Paris Masters and is undefeated winning the ATP Finals, taking his points tally to 8160
- Djokovic is restricted to less than 625 points in total for Paris and the ATP Finals.
If Djokovic loses his third round match to Damir Dzumhur, he needs to win a semi final and two round robin matches at the ATP Finals to ensure the year end number one ranking, if Federer were to remain undefeated for the rest of 2018.
That may be impossible, because depending on the draw, the pair may have to play each other in a semi final in London.
If Federer were to win Paris, Djokovic will have failed to reach the final, since he is drawn to meet Federer in the semis, so the maximum points he will amass in this scenario is 360.
Two round robin wins in the ATP Finals will then be enough to see him as year end number one.
One round robin for Djokovic , and Federer will be number one, provided he is undefeated to the end.
Statistically it is possible, but realistically a long odds bet.
