Two lengthy second round matches were played out in the Hana-Cupid Japan Women’s Open in Hiroshima.
The longer of the two featured Anna Karolina Schmiedlova - she had a much better first serve percentage than Viktorija Golubic in the opening set of their clash, but couldn’t win sufficient points when the initial delivery landed.
The pressure of the Swiss return resulted in nine break points, and three service breaks for Golubic. Schmiedlova was down 5-7.
The same scoreline occurred in set two, but the Slovakian was on top, first serve percentage still good, but better conversion into points won. Schmiedlova also captured almost half the points off the Golubic serve.
Three breaks of serve for the set - one for Golubic and two for Schmiedlova (from 12 opportunities).
The deciding set was highlighted by the waste of break points by Golubic (1 converted from 6), and an assault on the Swiss second serve by Schmiedlova (9 points won from a possible 10)
Schmiedlova won 5-7 7-5 6-3 in a touch under three hours.
She will play American qualifier Amanda Anisimova in the quarter finals. Anisimova just turned 17, and this is her first WTA Tour quarter final, after defeating seventh seed Saisai Zheng.
