A Williams double fault and 0-30. A forehand Goerges pass and she had three break points, the first for her of the match. A Williams backhand cross court saved one. The second saved with a service winner. A slashing return forced Williams out of any sort of response and the break came. Williams led 5-4 but games were back on serve.
Goerges missed wide 0-15. Forehand wide 0-30. Double fault and triple match point. The hope of an all German final slipping away.
A lob attempt from Goerges went long and the match was over.
Serena Williams defeated Julia Goerges 6-2 6-4, but the scoreline belies the fact that this match was high quality. Julia Goerges played well and can be proud of her performance. Serena Williams was just too high a mountain too climb - her tennis today was far and away the best of the tournament to date.
Another German opponent awaits in the final.
Serena Williams and Angie Kerber will contest the Wimbledon 2018 Ladies Singles Final as they did in 2016.
Serena’s achievement of a tenth Wimbledon final is outstanding for many reasons, one being the fact that this is only her fourth tournament since giving birth to her daughter
