US Open - round two catch up (2)

Thursday was a relief for organisers of the 2019 US Open - they awoke to ok weather. On the other hand, time was the enemy, as almost all of the second round matches from the top of men’s singles draw, and the bottom of the women’s singles draw, needed to be contested.  Not only that, but all of the second round for the bottom half of the men’s and top half of the women’s, would be played, because that was actually how the tournament was originally scheduled for Thursday, assuming no interference.

Here is what happened on a day of non stop high quality tennis, and some more high profile exits.

US Open - round two - first attempt

First Wednesday of US Open 2019 and first interaction with the rain - not an issue for those players scheduled to compete under the roof on Arthur Ashe Stadium, and similarly for the ones rostered on at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

For unprotected outside courts, however, not a lot of tennis likely. When matches did receive the go ahead, and scoring on four courts began, the rain quickly returned, and remained. Mass cancellations and a bad day for ticket holders.

Second round results

US Open - round one

The top 3 men’s seeds were untroubled in opening round matches at the 2019 US Open. However, it was carnage amongst the remaining top ten seeds.
Four of the seven left Flushing Meadows, and all were on the bottom side of the draw.

Dominic Thiem (4), Stefanos Tsitsipas (8), Karen Khachanov (9) and Roberto Bautista Agut (10) lost, as did other seeds:

Fabio Fognini (11), Félix Auger-Aliassime (18), Guido Pella (19), Taylor Fritz (26), and Kyle Edmund (30)

The women weren’t immune to upsets either, with former US Open champions Sloane Stephens (11) (2017) and Angie Kerber (14) (2016) both losing opening matches.

Other seeds to fall were:

Garbiñe Muguruza (24), Caroline Garcia (27), Carla Suarez Navarro (28) and Barbora Strycova (31).

US Open Preview - Women’s Singles

Naomi Osaka is defending champion and top seed, but form coming in to the tournament is scratchy, and retiring from Cincinnati with injury places some doubt about her chances.
First up, Osaka plays Anna Blinkova, quarter finalist in The Bronx Open last week, then probably has Magda Linette, winner of The Bronx Open in round two.
The path, according to seedings, for Osaka involves Carla Suárez Navarro, Belinda Bencic, and seventh seed Kiki Bertens in a quarter final.  I predict success for unseeded Victoria Azarenka after she upsets ninth seed Aryna Sabalenka in the opening round. In the round of sixteen, she will test Bertens, but fall just short.

Simona Halep, seeded number four, is the big danger to Osaka in the top half of the draw. A reasonable draw has been granted the Wimbledon champion, American qualifier Nicole Gibbs the initial hurdle. Kateryna Kozlova and Barbora Strycova (31) should be the next opponents and once accounted for, a round of sixteen clash with teenage high flier Bianca Andreescu (15).
A quarter final with Petra Kvitová (6) is my forecast.

Lots of potential big moments in the bottom part of the draw. Elina Svitolina (5) has in her quarter Zheng Saisai, Venus Williams, Dayana Yastremska (32) and Sofia Kenin (20). Kenin could meet Madison Keys (10) in the round of sixteen. Keys just won Cincinnati, and must rate herself a chance at Flushing Meadows.
I believe that Keys will win through to the quarter final against Karolina Pliskova (3). Pliskova has, on paper, a very favourable draw. These two are both former US Open finalists.

Serena Williams (8) plays Maria Sharapova in the opening round, which should draw a huge crowd. If last years runner-up passes that test, it will probably be a smooth ride to the quarter finals. Here, Serena is drawn to meet second seed Ash Barty. The Australian will likely need to overcome María Sakkari (30) and Angie Kerber (14) to reach Serena.

My forecast:

Quarter finals:

Kiki  Bertens (7) to defeat Naomi Osaka (1)
Simona Halep (4) to defeat Petra Kvitová (6)
Madison Keys (10) to defeat Karolina Pliskova (3)
Ash Barty (2) to defeat Serena Williams (8)

Semi finals:

Simona Halep (4) to defeat Kiki Bertens (7)
Madison Keys (10) to defeat Ash Barty (2)

Winner:  Simona Halep

First titles to Poland’s Linette, Hurkacz

Titles were decided in The Bronx and Winston-Salem.

Bronx Open - a WTA International category tournament, on Hard, Decoturf, in The Bronx, New York City, USA, 18-24 August 2019.

Final result

- Qualifier Magda Linette defeated Camila Giorgi 5-7 7-5 6-4

This was Linette’s second ever WTA final, following her first way back in 2015, where she lost an unseeded finale to Yanina Wickmayer in the Japan Women’s Open.

So, The Bronx provided the background for a debut triumph, made more special for it coming from qualifying, and including victories over three seeded opponents.

The title brings a 27 spot rise in the rankings to #53, a new career high for the 27 year old.

Camila Giorgi rises 10 places back into the top fifty at #48.

Winston-Salem  Open - an ATP 250 category tournament, on Hard Deco Turf, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA, 18-24 August 2019.

Defending champion:

Daniil Medvedev who defeated Steve Johnson (8) 6-4 6-4

Final result

- Hubert Hurkacz (3) defeated Benoit Paire (1) 6-3 3-6 6-3

In his first ATP final, the fast improving Hurkacz completed a dream week for Poland as he joined Magda Linette in lifting trophies in the name of their nation.

Hurkacz jumps places to a new career high ranking of #35, while Paire gains four spots to #26, moving closer back to his career high of #18.

Medvedev and Keys take Cincinnati titles

Cincinnati finals.

Western & Southern Open - an ATP Masters 1000 category tournament, on Hard, Deco-Turf, in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, 12-18 August 2019.

Defending champion:

Novak Djokovic (10) who defeated Roger Federer (2) 6-4 6-4

Final result

Daniil Medvedev (9) defeated David Goffin (16) 7-6(3) 6-4

Medvedev is the hottest player on the ATP Tour at the moment, having made the final in the last three tournaments, two at Masters 1000 level. He has finally broken through to win a Masters title, and he defeated Novak Djokovic in he semis on the way to achieve it. That’s twice in a row the world number one has fallen to Medvedev, following the loss in Monaco earlier this year.

Daniil has moved up three spots to a career high ranking of #5, and also sits at #5 in the 2019 ATP Race.

Goffin also achieved a milestone in Cincinnati, making his first Masters 1000 final. His ranking has moved up four spots to #15, and both he and Medvedev can look confidently to Flushing Meadows in a couple of weeks.

Western & Southern Open - a WTA Premier 5 category tournament, on Hard, Deco-Turf, in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, 12-18 August 2019.

Defending champion:

Kiki Bertens who defeated Simona Halep (1) 2-6 7-6(6) 6-2

Final result

Madison Keys (16) defeated wildcard Sveta Kuznetsova 7-5 7-6(5), after trailing in each set down a break.

This was the second title of the year for Keys, and the biggest of her career. It put her back in contention for the US Open, after a series of inconsistent results had frustrated her season since the April success on clay in Charleston.

The win propels Keys up eight spots back into the top ten at #10, and now she is #13 in the 2019 WTA Race.

Sveta Kuznetsova enjoyed a remarkable tournament, considering her injury interrupted 2019, and a ranking of 153 entering Cincinnati. The dual Grand Slam title holder certainly took advantage of the wildcard granted her, and her appearance in the final enabled her to jump ninety one spots to #62 in the rankings.  She now is #47 in the 2019 WTA Race.

Thanks to Sveta, the number one ranking is still held by Naomi Osaka, as the Russian took out both challengers to the top spot - Karolina Pliskova in the quarters and Ash Barty in the semis.
