Quarter finals
- Alex de Minaur (3) v Jordan Thompson
In a battle of the Australians, Thompson was broken in the opening game of the match.
The two prior meetings between the pair were both this year, both in the Australian summer, and both won in straight sets by de Minaur.
A love game consolidated the break for the Aussie #1, and he repeated the dose to lead 3-1.
de Minaur used the second of two break points to achieve a double break and with his third successive love game was ahead 5-1, creating havoc for a hapless Thompson. The more experienced Australian held serve, and then finally took a point off the de Minaur serve. More than that, he saved three set points en route to breaking serve.
Following his third game in a row, Thompson asked de Minaur to attempt a second time to serve it out.
A fourth love game did the trick and de Minaur led 6-4.
Three of the first four games of set two were won to love, the exception being game two, which saw Thompson initiating a service break. The break held, but not without a scare - break back points were saved in games five and seven, leaving de Minaur at 2-5, having to hold and stay alive in the set.
He couldn’t do it, Thompson converting the first of two set points, forcing a third and deciding set.
de Minaur gained the initial break in the decider, and led 2-1. However, his lead was momentary, with Thompson breaking in the next two de Minaur service games.
At 5-3, Thompson delivered a love game to take the match 4-6 6-2 6-3.
