Mackenzie McDonald (USA) v Jannik Sinner (5) (Italy)
In his first ATP final, Mackenzie McDonald faced Jannik Sinner for the first time in their short careers.
Sinner was seeking his third title from a fourth final, having already claimed one title this year - the Great Ocean Road Open in Australia in February.
After three successive service breaks in games 4 to 6 in set one, Sinner had the edge, and eventually was serving for the set at 5-3.
The fifth seed led 30-15 but lost the next three points and games were back on serve.McDonald levelled at 5-5 after saving six set points in a game lasting 17 points.
Sinner in contrast, delivered a love game to lead 6-5.
McDonald saved four more set points in the twelfth game, but Sinner converted a fifth to take the set 7-5.
Set two was much easier on the server, and the first six games saw Sinner save a break point in game three, and McDonald save two break points in game six.
McDonald struck in the next game, breaking Sinner to 15. He then won 8 of 9 points in his next two service games to level the match at 5-7 6-4.
Sinner, with an early break in the decider, had a handy 3-0 advantage which was consolidated after saving a couple of break points in the fifth game.
McDonald saved two match points when serving at 2-5, then broke when Sinner was serving for the match at 5-3.
As in set one, McDonald levelled at 5-5, but quicker, and Sinner moved it to 6-5 with a love game.
McDonald had a game point to take it to a tie break, but Sinner spoiled that hope by snaffling the final three points and the match 7-5 4-6 7-5.
Title number three, and second for 2021 to Jannik Sinner, who moves up nine spots to a career high ranking of #15.
Mackenzie McDonald has moved up 43 places back into the top 100 at #64.
