Serena withdrawal - Rafa through

While round of sixteen matches have been, and are being contested, and Marin Cilic (3) is leading Fabio Fognini (18) by 6-4 6-1 3-6, and Juan Martin del Potro (5) holds a 6-4 6-4 lead over John Isner (9), the big news is Serena Williams withdrawing through injury.

This is most disappointing since it removes the blockbuster match with Maria Sharapova, who is given a free pass into a quarter final against the winner of the upcoming fourth round clash between 2016 champion Garbiñe Muguruza (3) and Lesia Tsurenko.

Rafa Nadal (1), by the way, has won a spot in the quarters by defeating Maximilian Marterer 6-3 6-2 7-6(4) and plays Diego Schwartzman (11) for a place in the semis.

Rafa has made the quarter final 12 times from 14 attempts, only missing in 2009 (4th round to Robin Söderling- donating the only chance Federer had to win this title) and 2016 (3rd round - didn’t lose but withdrew through injury)

Of the eleven previous times, he proceeded to win the championship on ten occasions.

With this win Nadal has clicked over to 900 in his career, the fifth player to do so - Connors, Federer, Lendl and Vilas the others.  Nadal’s return of wins from matches played is the best of the five at 82.8 %.

Maximilian Marterer has moved his career high ranking from 67 to 50.

Last week he was in 70th spot
