Kvitova takes Madrid - 4 wins 2018

The Madrid Open has another women’s champion and already the qualifying for the Italian Open has begun.

The trophy in Madrid was lifted by Petra Kvitova (10), who defeated Kiki Bertens in a classic final which almost lasted three hours.

Five of the first eight games went to deuce, and Bertens broke first, leading 4-2, but Kvitova struck back and it was 4-4.

Fittingly the opening set was decided in a tie break and Kvitova won through to lead.

Bertens didn’t face a break point in set two, which was just as evenly contested as the first, but she gathered three chances of her own, and converted one to level the match 6-7(6) 6-4.

Kvitova outlasted Bertens in the final set, breaking the Dutch serve in the sixth and eighth games to claim her fourth title for the year 7-6(6) 4-6 6-3 - a record third Madrid victory.

Petra rises from 10 to 8 in the world rankings, while Kiki moves to a career high of 15.

The men’s semis were also played:

Dominic Thiem (5) defeated Kevin Anderson (6) 6-4 6-2

He will play Sascha Zverev in the final

Sascha Zverev (2) defeated Denis Shapovalov 6-4 6-1
