Serena but with concern

Serena Williams should not be loaded with as many worries as Caroline was. The best player of her generation and best of this moment had assigned to her the task of ridding Melbourne Park of the singles presence offered by Edina Gallovits-Hall from Romania.

The less equipped girl served first and at times appeared capable of winning the game, if winning is defined as Serena stuffing up. Serena did not fire on all cylinders, if any, yet scraped through to break serve and lead 1-0.

Serving, Serena gradually became more fluid on her actions but still hadn't shifted out of a low gear. She did enough to win the game but so far Venus led the Williams sisters based on the world regarded impressometer.

4-0 without anything to write home about makes it scary if she ever let her full potential run free.

Shock in the fifth game with Serena falling awkwardly and injuring a leg. Looked serious and just when the champion is back at the top of tennis another dose of bad luck comes her way.

Treatment and strapping had Serena back on court to amazingly break serve for 5-0 but the movement was unconvincing and untested by her opponent yet.

How would the service action hold up?

Seemed OK but Edina was doing her a favour by failing to move her around the court, Serena able to virtually stand still and hit the ball for winners or force mistakes.

6-0 and lots of doubt.

Three games into the second set and the amazing Serena had yet to concede a game while playing on one leg. Sure if an Azarenka was her opponent then things would be vastly different but these were the circumstances and this is how a courageous champion gained even more admirers, whatever the ultimate outcome of her Aus Open attempt in 2013.

6-0 6-0 and 2 days to find a miracle cure or a replacement leg.
