WTA - Madrid 2R complete

Second round completed and round of sixteen set in Madrid.

ATP - Madrid 1R start

First round commenced in Madrid.

2022 Mutua Madrid Open an ATP Masters 1000 tournament, on Clayin Madrid, Spain, 1-8 May 2022.

Defending champion:
Alexander Zverev (5) who defeated Matteo Berrettini (8) 6-7(8) 6-4 6-3

11th seed Taylor Fritz withdrew after the main draw was published due to a foot injury, and was replaced by lucky loser Ugo Humbert.

Roberto Bautista Agut was instated as 17th seed and moved in the draw to the place previously occupied by Fritz.
Bautista Agut’s original place in the draw was taken by qualifier Dusan Lajovic.
Humbert’s place in the draw was originally reserved for a qualifier, but as a lucky loser he now filled the spot, and would play Denis Shapovalov (14) first up.

Baez first title in Estoril

Final day in Estoril.

2022 Millennium Estoril Open an ATP 250 tournament, on Clayin Estoril, Portugal, 25 April - 1 May 2022.

Defending champion:
Albert Ramos-Vinolas (7) who defeated Cameron Norrie 4-6 6-3 7-6(3)

Final:

Frances Tiafoe (5) (USA) v Sebastian Baez (Argentina)

This would be the first ATP meeting between the pair.

Tiafoe was aiming for a second title in his fourth final.
His one title to date was claimed in Delray Beach, February 2018, and most recent final was Vienna in October last year.

Baez would be looking for his first title in his second final. His first final was the Chile Open in February this year - he lost to Pedro Martinez.

Tiafoe broke the Baez serve in the opening game, and had three chances in the third game to force a double break.
Baez managed to hold on but still trailed 1-2.

Baez converted the second of two break back chances in game four. 2-2.
A,love game to consolidate and the Argentine led 3-2.

Riding the momentum, Baez broke again, then held and with five successive games had a 5-2 advantage.
Serving to stay in the set, Tiafoe contributed a love game, and forced Baez to serve it out.

Baez lost the opening point, but with a forehand winner and a perfect drop shot, he arrived at two set points.
Another forehand winner gave him the set 6-3.

Set two was competitive for four games, but after 2-2, Baez broke Tiafoe twice, and he served out the match without facing a break point in the set.
Sebastian Baez was victorious 6-3 6-2, claiming the Estoril Open as his first title.

Rune wins Munich

Final day in Munich..

2022 BMW Open by American Express an ATP 250 tournament, on Clayin Munich, Germany, 25 April - 1 May 2022.

Defending champion:
Nikoloz Basilashvili (5) who defeated Jan-Lennard Struff (7) 6-4 7-6(5)

Final:

Wildcard Holger Rune (Denmark) v Botic van de Zandschulp (8) (Netherlands)

This would be the first ATP meeting between the two players, and the first final for both.

Botic served first and, although taken to deuce, held for 1-0.

Three successive service breaks then gave Botic a 3-1 lead. This was extended to 4-1 when the eighth seed delivered a love game.

Serving at 4-2 and 30-0, Botic lost three straight points and faced a break point.
He saved it and two more afterwards, but when a fourth break chance came, Rune ran down a drop shot and forced Botic into error.
The break and games back on serve.

Lengthy medical time out for Botic. 

Once play resumed, Rune served at 3-4. At 40-15, Botic had to retire and the match was over.

Holger Rune won 3-4 (retired) and collected his first ATP title.
