Final:

Marcos Giron (3) (USA) v Brandon Nakashima (5) (USA)

The players had never met before in an ATP Tour level match.

Nakashima broke the Giron serve in game five of the match.
No break point was faced by either player in any other game of the the first set.
Nakashima served out the set with a love game, and was ahead 6-4.

Set two was a little more complex.
Nakashima broke Giron in the opening game, and was taken to deuce before consolidating for 2-0.
Giron was also taken to deuce in the following game, but held.

Nakashima saved three break points in the fourth game, but was broken on the fourth and games were tied at 2-2.
Nakashima then broke to love and held to love, to again hold ascendency at 4-2.
Giron survived a five deuce game which included saving a break point, thus avoiding a double break deficit.

However, Nakashima held on to the single break, and served out the match, his last game to love.

Brandon Nakashima won the San Diego Open 6-4 6-4, his first title from three finals.

Alexander Bublik (7) (Kazakhstan) v Lorenzo Sonego (Italy)

Sonego won all three previous meetings between the players, the most recent a quarter final in Eastbourne, June 2021.

Sonego served first, and held comfortably, a drop shot winner included.
Bublik levelled easily, a forehand winner helping.

In game five three winners from Bublik saw Sonego facing three break points.
All were saved, and Sonego ultimately held for 3-2.

Sonego was taken to deuce in the ninth game before holding for 5-4.
Bublik saved a set point in game ten with a backhand pass, and held for 5-5.

A tie break was required at 6-6.
Sonego won the tie break and the set 7-6(3).

Sonego broke the Bublik serve in game three of set two, and led 2-1.
Bublik was broken again in the fifth game and trailed 1-4.

Serving at 1-5 to stay in the match, Bublik held, forcing Sonego to serve for it.

Lorenzo Sonego served it out 7-6(3) 6-2 to claim his third title from five finals, his last In Cagliari, April 2021.

Alexandrova wins Seoul title

Final day in Seoul.

Defending champion:

Final:

Jelena Ostapenko (1) (Latvia) v Ekaterina Alexandrova (2)

Alexandrova won four of the six previous meetings between the players, including the most recent - first round Madrid this year.

Ostapenko served first and held for 1-0.
Then the next four games saw breaks of serve.
At 2–3, Alexandrova saved two break points before holding, and avoiding a fifth straight dropping of serve.

Serving at 3-4, Alexandrova wasn’t as fortunate, and Ostapenko broke to lead 5-3.

Serving for the set, Ostapenko was broken to love, and games were back on serve.
Alexandrova would serve to stay in the set at 4-5.

After being taken to deuce, Alexandrova held and levelled at 5-5.

Serving at 5-6, again to stay in the set, Alexandrova saved a set point before holding and forcing a tie break.

Three mini breaks in the first nine points - two to Alexandrova - leaving the Russian ahead 5-4 and two serves to come.
She won both points and the opening set 7-6(4).

Alexandrova won the first three games of set two, including a break of the Ostapenko serve in game two.
Another break in the fourth game, followed by a consolidation, left Alexandrova 5-0 ahead.

Serving to stay in the match, Ostapenko, clearly hampered by injury, was broken to love, and the match was over.

Ekaterina Alexandrova won 7-6(4) 6-0 and claimed the title, her third from five finals.
Second title this year, following ‘s-Hertogenbosch in June.

Samsonova wins Tokyo title

Final day in Tokyo.

Zheng Qinwen (China) v Liudmila Samsonova 

Zheng Qinwen won the only previous encounter between the players - first round in Palermo, on clay, July 2021.

Samsonova saved two break points in her first service game, one with a forehand winner. She held for 1-1.
Serve was held easily for the next seven games and Zheng led 5-4.

Samsonova served to stay in the set.
Forehand long from Samsonova. 0-15. Forehand netted by Samsonova. 0-30. Zheng forehand long. 15-30.
Zheng forehand wide 30-30. Zheng backhand return long 40-30. Zheng netted a forehand and Samsonova held for 5-5.

Two Samsonova forehand winners had Zheng behind 0-30, but she fought back to 40-30.
However, three successive points to Samsonova - a double fault plus two winners, one on break point - produced a service break and the Russian led 6-5.

Samsonova served it out comfortably 7-5.

In game two of set two, Samsonova led 40-0, but was taken to deuce three times before holding for 1-1.
In game five, Zheng saved two break points, but was unable to save a third, and Samsonova broke for 3-2.

Zheng broke back immediately. 3-3.
In game nine, Zheng saved two break points before holding for 5-4.

Samsonova served to stay in the set, and did so.

On break point in the eleventh game, Samsonova found a forehand winner and led 6-5.

Samsonova served for the match.

Zheng forehand wide. 15-0. Return long. 30-0. Return netted. Three match points.
Return wide and the match was over.

Liudmila Samsonova won the match 7-5 7-5 and the title.
This was her fourth title from four finals.

Three titles in her last four tournaments.
