Nadal wins 2nd Australian Open

2022 Australian Open - Day Fourteen

Men’s Singles final:

Rafael Nadal (6) (Spain) v Daniil Medvedev (2) (Russia)

Nadal had won heaps of majors, but only one Australian Open, and that was way back in 2009.
Still, one more than Medvedev, whose best effort was as a finalist last year when obliterated by Djokovic, a fate similarly suffered by Nadal in 2019.
Medvedev won the 2021 US Open, his maiden major, in doing so spoiling the Grand Slam plans of Djokovic, and if he played his cards right he could spoil Nadal’s plans to overtake Roger and Novak in the progressively boring GS numbers game.

Nadal defeated Medvedev in the 2019 US Open, and on two other occasions, but Medvedev won their last contest - semis of the 2020 ATP Finals in London.

Final:

The first four games were shared, but Nadal struggled, needing trips to deuce in both his service games.
In game five, he was broken to love, winners from Medvedev the catalyst.

Game seven saw a pair of double faults from the sixth seed lead to another love game and Medvedev breaking for 5-2.
The #2 seed clinically served out the set 6-2.

Nadal steadied, and in set two was the first to break serve. It was in the fourth game, and after some Medvedev errors and a Nadal winner, two break points were produced. One was saved with an ace, but a failed backhand confirmed the loss of serve.

Medvedev retrieved the break in game seven, only to have Nadal snatch back the advantage immediately the next game.
Nadal served for the set at 5-3, saved four break points, saw one set point vanish, and eventually lost serve with the fifth break opportunity offered Medvedev.

A tie break arrived, and Nadal earned a 5-3 lead. Medvedev then forced the sixth seed into error, and levelled at 5-5.
Two forehand winners granted Medvedev the set 7-6(5) and a two sets to love lead.

Medvedev began set three with a game of six deuces, five wasted game points, and a break point saved thanks to Nadal messing up a forehand.
Then things settled down until the sixth game where Nadal had issues.
Down 0-40 he saved all three of the break points and ultimately held for 3-3.

At 4-4, Nadal, with assistance from his backhand, broke the Medvedev serve, and would serve for the set.
Three forehands and one backhand all were winners, and these comprised a love game for Nadal. He won the set 6-4.

In set four, Nadal broke Medvedev in game three, and Medvedev broke straight back.
Game five was elongated to say the least. Medvedev was down 0-40, saved the three break points to arrive at deuce, then had to save another three break points. He wasn’t able to save a seventh, and Nadal moved ahead 3-2.

Nadal faced two break points in the eighth game but saved them both. Forehand winners and an ace rocketed him to 5-3.
Medvedev served to stay in the set, and from 30-15, Nadal’s backhand produced two successive winners and a set point.
It was saved. Medvedev held on, but Nadal would serve at 5-4 to take the match into a fifth set.

A love game, Nadal’s set 6-4, and a fifth set required.

Three aces from Medvedev in the opening game of the final set, and he still had to save a break point along the way.

As in set four, Nadal broke Medvedev in game five, and led 3-2. Writing on the wall now for Medvedev who had found it difficult to make an impact on the Spanish serve. And too many unforced errors at critical times off the Russian racquet.
Chances actually did come in the sixth game, but Medvedev couldn’t capitalise on the three break points that materialised, and Nadal stood firm.
4-2 and the end so close.

Nadal served at 5-4 for the match.
At 30-15, Nadal double faulted. Then Medvedev hit a forehand winner and created a break back point. Nadal was broken with an unforced error.
5-5.
Unforced errors cost Medvedev in the next game. He saved two break points, but not a third, and he gave Nadal another chance to serve for the match.

This time Nadal served it out.

Rafa Nadal won the 2022 Australian Open 2-6 6-7(5) 6-4 6-4 7-5

Doubles Czech Cashed

2022 Australian Open - Day Fourteen

Women’s Doubles final:

Barbora Krejcikova / Katerina Siniakova (1) (Czech Republic) v  Anna Danilina (Kazakhstan) / Beatriz Haddad Maia (Brazil)

Best previous doubles result at a major:

The Czech pair won the doubles championship at Roland Garros in 2018 and 2021, and Wimbledon in 2021.
They were finalists at the Australian Open in 2021,

Beatriz Haddad Maia made the third round at Wimbledon in 2017 with Ana Konjuh
Anna Danilina first experienced GS main draw doubles at the 2021 US Open with partner Yaroslava Shvedova, losing in the first round.

Final:

Krejcikova served first, and after a scratchy 0-30 start, the team held on, thanks largely to Siniakova’s smart work around the net.
Haddad Maia served first for her team, and was convincing, forehand winners included. 1-1.

Strong returning in the Siniakova service game saw a break point emerge, and it was converted when Danilina put away a winner at the net.
2-1 to the underdogs.
At 4-3, on the serve of Danilina, a game point was wasted, and the constant pressure from the top seeds forced a break back.
4-4.

Siniakova served at 5-5, and from deuce, two unforced errors gave up a break to the others, and Danilina would serve for the set at 6-5.

Mostly unforced errors gave the break straight back and introduced a tie break.

6-0 quickly to the unseeded team, forcing errors and rattling the top seeds. Krejcikova hit a winner to save one set point, and another was saved when a backhand error was forced. A third was saved with a Siniakova backhand winner.
However an ace from Haddad Maia won her team the set 7-6(3). The first set dropped all tournament by the Czech team.

Game one of set two saw Krejcikova’s forehand winner give her team a break point, but great defence by the opposition, and a shocking overhead from Krejcikova saved it.
Still an unforced error and double fault resulted in a break anyway.

This was consolidated easily for 2-0.

Apart from the sixth game, with Krejcikova serving, missing several simple shots, and needing help to avoid a break point, the set was played out conventionally, and the top seeds levelled, winning it 6-4.

Siniakova was at the line in game four of the decider.  She struggled with a pair of double faults, and even faced a break point, but the team survived and the score was 2-2.
Krejcikova, with a forehand winner, gave the top seeds two break points in game five, following a Haddad Maia double fault and unforced error.
Another error confirmed the service break, and it was looking grim for the unseeded pair, now trailing 2-3.

Consolidation for 4-2, ending with a wonderful Krejcikova backhand winner.

Danilina faced two break points when she served in the seventh game. One was saved, but a Czech winner on the second extended the lead to 5-2, and the top seeds would serve for the match, Siniakova with the task.

The task was too much, and one of the breaks was retrieved. 3-5, and Haddad Maia to serve.
Serve held comfortably, and now Krejcikova’s turn to try and serve it out at 5-4.

A double fault at 30-15 could have made it interesting, but Krejcikova had nerves of steel, and her two forehand winners gave the match its conclusion.

The winners of 2022 Australian Open Women’s Doubles were Krejcikova and Siniakova 6-7(3) 6-4 6-4.

Aussies Double Up

2022 Australian Open - Day Thirteen

Men’s Doubles final:

Wildcards Thanasi Kokkinakis / Nick Kyrgios (Australia) (KK) v Matthew Ebden / Max Purcell (Australia) (MM)

Previous best in GS doubles:

Kokkinakis - 3rd round 2015 Wimbledon with Lleyton Hewitt
Kyrgios - 3rd round 2016 Wimbledon with Dan Evans, 2017 Roland Garros with Jordan Thompson

Ebden - QF 2012 Roland Garros with Ryan Harrison

Ebden also made the quarter finals of the 2021 US Open with this years partner Max Purcell.

Final:

MM were taken to deuce in the opening game, but from then on, it was clearly going to be difficult to break serve.
Towards the end of set one, things tightened somewhat, no break points, but deuces in games nine and ten.
Ebden served at 5-5, and his team was in trouble at 15-40. A lucky net cord return from Kyrgios didn’t help. The two break points were saved, as was another, but a fourth one, set up by a Kokkinakis forehand winner, wasn’t and KK cracked through.
Kokkinakis served a love game and KK won the set 7-5.

Set two was 3-3 after four successive love games and only three points against serve,
Then Ebden went to the line.
A returning game of the highest order saw MM forced onto the back foot, into error four times and the Ebden serve smashed.
Kokkinakis in particular was savage with his shot making.
KK led 4-3.

Purcell served at 3-5 to keep MM alive, and the team had to save a match point. Purcell did with a fine first serve.
MM held serve,

However, that left Kyrgios to serve at 5-4 for his team to win the match.
A forehand put away and two aces later, KK had three match points.
Kokkinakis finished it off with a backhand at the net,

Kokkinakis and Kyrgios won the 2022 Australian Open Men’s Doubles title 7-5 6-4

Ash Barty’s Party

2022 Australian Open - Day Thirteen

Women’s Singles final:

Ashleigh Barty (1) (Australia) v Danielle Collins (27) (USA)

Barty, champion at Roland Garros 2019 and Wimbledon 2021, was in her first Australian Open final.
Collins, AO semi finalist in 2020, was in her first final of any major.
Collins had lost her first three matches against Barty, but won the most recent - Adelaide round of sixteen in 2021.

Final:

The most significant game of set one was the fifth, where Barty led 40-15.
Collins’ backhand winner, and two Barty forehand errors produced a break point for the American.
Barty saved it with a winning forehand, and she held serve, punctuated with an ace.
Next game, Collins appeared to lose rhythm, and Barty exploited the lack of solid shot making to that point Collins had displayed.
A break chance arrived, and the 27th seed double faulted.

Barty needed to hold two serves to take the set - she lost just one point in those games and that was a double fault.
The set was won by the Australian 6-3, the final point an ace.

The momentum shifted dramatically in set two, with Barty dropping serve for only the second time in the tournament.
It was in game two, where a load of forehands went astray, leaving Barty facing two break points. An ace saved one, but Collins broke with a forehand winner.
Two double faults in game six from Barty gifted a second service break, and Collins at 5-1 was serving for the set.

Barty’s comeback was unexpected, but clinical. The top seed won four successive games, twice breaking Collins as the American served for the set, and a tie break was required.

Once Barty took the first point when Collins’ forehand failed, it all fell to pieces for Danielle. She had given up a point on her own serve, and Barty seized on that opportunity. It was 4-0 in a flash, and 5-1 at change of ends. Two of the points were Barty forehand winners and her confidence was growing as that of her opponent’s was wilting.

At 6-2, with four championship points, Barty delighted the stadium with another forehand winner to complete the contest.

Ash Barty won her third Grand Slam tournament, and first Australian Open 6-3 7-6(2).

Mladenovic & Dodig win AO Mixed Doubles

2022 Australian Open - Day Twelve

Mixed Doubles final:

Scoring rules: both dumb
At deuce, the next point wins the game. (no advantage)
If sets are 1-1, decider is a 10 point tie break

Wildcards Jaimee Fourlis / Jason Kubler (Australia) v Kristina Mladenovic (France) / Ivan Dodig (Croatia) (5)

The Australians took advantage of the wildcard, and surprised everyone by making it through to the final.
Fourlis, ranked 204 in womens doubles, and Kubler ranked 585 in mens doubles, outplayed a number of more credentialed doubles teams, beginning with 7th seeds Stojanovic and Pavic in the opening round.

The opponents in the final were seeded five for a reason.
Mladenovic, ranked 25 in womens doubles (has been as high as 1), won the AO mixed doubles in 2014 with Daniel Nestor, and the Wimbledon mixed doubles in 2013, also with Nestor.
Dodig, ranked 13 in mens doubles (has been as high as 4), won the Roland Garros mixed doubles in 2018 and 2019 with Latisha Chan, and the Wimbledon mixed doubles, also with Chan.

After the teams held serve in the first two games, the Aussies were first to break, cashing in on the Mladenovic delivery, Kubler’s overhead sealing it.
Fourlis was immediately broken in return, her backhand landing long on the first break point available. 2-2.

3-4, and 0-40, Fourlis was under constant attack, but in the end it was her partner that committed the error costing them another break. Aussies trailed 5-3.

Dodig served for the set.
An excellent lob from Fourlis and 30-30. Mladenovic’s forehand winner produced a set point. A Fourlis return out of court and the fifth seeds were ahead 6-3.

Fourlis double faulted at deuce in game three of set two, which under the silly rules, meant a drop of serve. Aussies down 1-2.
A break back happened on the Mladenovic serve, when at deuce, Fourlis hit straight at Dodig who was forced to protect himself rather than win the point.
Fourlis, yet to hold serve in the match, was broken again, losing the point after deuce, and the Aussies were deep in strife 3-4.

Mladenovic held comfortably and her team was a game away from the title.
Kubler also held, ensuring Dodig would need to serve for the match.

Mladenovic clinched it with a terrific forehand volley winner on championship point.

Kristina Mladenovic and Ivan Dodig deservedly won the 2022 Australian Open Mixed Doubles trophy 6-3 6-4.

2022 AO 4R - Auger-Aliassime d Cilic

Marin Cilic (27) (Croatia) v Felix Auger-Aliassime (9) (Canada)

Cilic was beaten in the AO final by Federer in 2018.
Auger-Aliassime AO best was round of sixteen last year.

Cilic won all 3 previous meetings, the most recent the final in Stuttgart, June 2021.

Felix served first with a love game, including an ace and a service winner.
Three unforced errors from Cilic gave break points to Felix.
Both saved, the second with an ace. Another ace plus forehand winner clinched the game. 1-1.

Backhand and forehand winners helped Cilic break Felix in the third game.
After holding serve, finished with an ace, Cilic achieved the double break.
Setting up a break point with a forehand winner, Cilic received a double fault from Felix who now trailed 2-5.

Cilic served it out quickly 6-2.

No breaks of serve for five games in set two, but both taken to deuce in games two and three.
Felix had a break chance in the sixth game, but his forehand was wide, then Cilic forced a backhand error and delivered a service winner.
3–3.

Cilic, serving at 4-5, faced two set points. He saved one when he forced a backhand error. The next was saved when Felix missed with another backhand.
Cilic gave him another chance when he stuffed up a forehand. An ace fixed that. Cilic held for 5-5.

A tie break was necessary.

The first four points went with serve. The next four points didn’t. The next four points went with serve, and at 6-6, they changed ends.
Serving at 7-7, Cilic lost the point when Felix hit a forehand winner.
Felix won the set when he forced Cilic into error on his backhand. 7-6(7).

Felix broke Cilic in the third game of set three, after Cilic saved five break points.
Cilic was broken once more in the seventh game and Felix served for the set at 5-2.

Two service winners and Felix was within a point of the set.
An ace gave him a 2-6 7-6(7) 6-2 lead.

Game one of set four - Cilic saved two break points with service winners. He finished the game with an ace.

No more break points available in the set, and so a tie break.

Cilic lost the first point which was on his serve.
The next five points went with serve, and Felix led 4-2 at the change of ends.
An ace gave him 5-2.
Cilic won both points on his serve, leaving Felix to serve out the match.

A forehand winner, then an ace gave Felix the match.

Felix Auger-Aliassime won through to the quarter finals 2-6 7-6(7) 6-2 7-6(4).

2022 AO 4R - Collins d Mertens

Danielle Collins (27) (USA) v Elise Mertens (19) (Belgium)

Round of sixteen

Former AO semi finalists - Collins (2019) and Mertens (2018) - won their ways in the draw to a third meeting between the two.
Mertens won a first round match at Wimbledon 2018.
Collins won a round of sixteen match in Chicago, October 2021

Collins served first.
A double fault didn’t faze her, and service was held with ease.
Mertens faced 3 break points after two of her errors and an American backhand winner.
Mertens saved them all with two aces and a forehand winner.
However two more errors from the Mertens racquet gave Collins the break. 2-0.

Collins wasted three game points before consolidating at 3-0.

Game five - from 30-0, Collins double faulted, then Mertens forced her into error, and serve was eventually dropped.
Games back on serve.

In the seventh game, Collins was ahead 30-15, but again she let the lead slip.
Mertens hit a backhand winner, and Collins delivered errors, one forced by Mertens to confirm a service break. The Belgian led 4-3.
Mertens survived four deuces and two break points to extend the lead. 5-3.

Serving to stay in the set, Collins began with a double fault. She saved a set point with a forehand winner.
Another Collins forehand winner ended the game, and forced Mertens to serve for the set. At 5-4.

A forehand return winner from Collins and a Mertens double fault. 0-30.
From 15-30, Mertens hit a backhand winner and an ace to bring up set point. It was saved.
Then a double fault gave Collins a break chance. It too was saved.
Mertens hit a backhand winner to create a second set point, and it was enough, as Collins failed with a forehand.
The set was in the bag for Mertens 6-4.

Collins saved two break points, and held serve to begin set two.
Mertens was broken in the next game, thanks largely to three Collins winners,
When attempting to consolidate, a double fault came, but three more winners more than compensated, and Collins led 3-0.

Serving at 5-3 for the set, Collins saved two break points, but not a third, and Mertens was back on serve, 4-5.
A great returning game from Collins game which included three clean winners, gave her the break and the set 6-4.
A decider required.

Both won their opening service games in set three - Collins a love game, Mertens survived two break points in hers.
A momentum switch - Collins broken to love in game three, unforced errors the last two points.
Collins broke back in the next game with her second opportunity. 2-2.

Mertens served at 4-5 to stay in the match.
Two match points were saved, but Collins set up a third with a backhand winner.
Mertens double faulted, and the match ended.

Danielle Collins won a place in the quarter finals 4-6 6-4 6-4.

2022 AO 4R - Krejcikova d Azarenka

Barbora Krejcikova (4) (Czech Republic) v Victoria Azarenka (24) (Belarus)

Round of sixteen

Azarenka won their only previous meeting - round of sixteen, Ostrava, October 2020.

Azarenka served first, and it was a love game, complete with an ace and finished with a forehand winner
Krejcikova levelled, but she took the long way home, throwing in a double fault and visiting deuce twice.
Azarenka must have been distracted, because her second try from the line was rather inconsistent.
Two game points were wasted - both through unforced backhand errors.
Krejcikova converted her only break chance with a backhand winner to lead 2-1.

Then we saw three successive love games, both players free to hit winners from all over the court.
Krejcikova led 4-2.

In the seventh game Azarenka, from 40-30, fell victim to the Krejcikova forehand. Two winners from that shot found Vika down a break point, and sadly a double fault gave Krejcikova a double break.

Serving for the set at 5-2, Krejcikova began with an ace. Azarenka replied with a forehand return winner.
A couple of Azarenka errors and two set points arrived.
Krejcikova forced Azarenka wide on the first of them. The error came and the set was won 6-2.

Set two began in the same manner, Krejcikova having three break points.
Two unforced errors and a double fault from Azarenka formed the situation, and a Krejcikova forehand winner sealed the deal.
1-0.
To consolidate, Krejcikova started with a pair of aces, but then Azarenka hit a backhand winner and Krejcikova contributed a couple of unforced errors.
Facing her first break point, the fourth seed was lucky to receive an Azarenka unforced error.
Krejcikova held for 2-0.

Azarenka, with timely good serving, forcing errors from the Czech racquet, saved a break point and held.
Azarenka created three break points, two with clean winners. Krejcikova saved two, but not the third, and Azarenka was back on serve.

Two forehand errors and a double fault from Azarenka gave the break straight back. Krejcikova led 3-2.
A love game with two aces and a forehand winner consolidated the break for Krejcikova.
Azarenka saved two break points in the seventh game, but double faulted on the third, and Krejcikova would serve for the match.

At 5-2, and serving for the match, Krejcikova didn’t have an issue. Azarenka hit one winner, but her errors were enough for Krejcikova to sail to victory 6-2 6-2.
Her quarter final will be against Madison Keys.

2022 AO 4R - Keys d Badosa

Madison Keys (USA) v Paula Badosa (8) (Spain)

Round of sixteen

Both players were taken the distance in their third round matches.
Wang Qiang lost to Keys in a final set tie break;
Marta Kostyuk worried Badosa into a decider, after the eighth seed appeared to be almost home at 6-2 4-3 with two break points for 5-3.

This was the first time between the pair.

Keys served first, and she held, finishing the game with the first winner of the match, a backhand.
The American went to work with her forehand - two outright winners, one forcing a Badosa error - all setting up two break points.
Badosa saved one with a service winner, but a Keys backhand winner sealed the break and a 2-0 impressive start.

A forehand winner and an ace made consolidation of the break reasonably simple for Keys.
Two double faults had Badosa facing another break point, but a second serve ace rescued her. 1-3.
A love game, laced with more backhand winners had Keys ahead 4-1.

Game six - Keys hit three clean winners to create two break points. Badosa saved them both by attacking the Keys forehand and forcing mistakes.
Keys kept the pressure with more winners or forcing shots, but again Badosa would pick out the American forehand and save herself.
Four break chances went begging and Badosa held on.

Unperturbed, Keys drilled winners from both wings and topped it off with an ace to be within a game of the set.
Badosa sailed through the next game, sealing it with a winning backhand, and forced Keys to serve the set out at 5-3.
Keys produced her second love game and packed away the set 6-3.

Badosa had two game points in the opener of set two, but Keys broke on the fifth chance given.
Keys had three chances to consolidate the break, but didn’t; instead her forehand let her down, allowing Badosa to cash in and break back.

Here endeth the good news for Paula.
Keys hit her second winner in the next game to make it deuce, and Badosa delivered two double faults to drop serve.
More winners for Keys as she held serve for 3-1.
Two more double faults from the Spanish racquet assisted Badosa to hand another break to Keys and it became 4-1.

Badosa hit the only winner in the sixth game, but still Keys held serve.
Badosa served to stay in the match.
Down 15-40, after Keys hit a forehand winner and the eighth seed double faulted and donated an unforced error.

Madison Keys won convincingly on the first match point 6-3 6-1, and was the first player through to the quarter finals.

2022 AO 3R - Medvedev d van de Zandschulp

Botic van de Zandschulp (Netherlands) v Daniil Medvedev (2) (Russia)

Medvedev, AO finalist last year, is aiming to go one better and win his second major, both in succession.

van de Zandschulp competed in the main draw of Grand Slam tournaments for the first time in 2021.
He made the quarters of the US Open after making it through qualifying. He defeated seeded players Casper Ruud and Diego Schwartzman en route to his quarter final match with eventual champion Daniil Medvedev, his third round opponent in this years AO. He won a set in that encounter, their only meeting prior to now.

For ease, reference to the Dutchman from now will be Botic.

Botic served first and held with purpose. One long rally was particularly noteworthy.
Medvedev was ruthless in levelling with a love game.
In game three, Medvedev didn’t miss when he had a break chance. His forehand winner clinched the break and he was ahead 2-1.

Taken to deuce after a double fault, Medvedev simply rocketed down a couple of serves unable to be handled, and it was 3-1.

Serving for the set at 5-4, Medvedev double faulted to give Botic two break back points.
Medvedev saved them both and won the set 6-4.

Three winners in a love game gave Botic just the right start to set two.
But Medvedev replied with an easy service hold, an ace to finish the game. 1-1.
A promising start to the set soon turned to disaster for Botic as he dropped serve to love and Medvedev was leading 2-1, just like set one.

After holding to love, and having won 12 points in a row, Medvedev extended his lead to 3-1.
Game five - Botic saved two break points to temporarily stop the rot. He trailed 2-3.

Medvedev saved a break point to lead 4-2, but that was his only concern as he served out the set 6-4.

In set three, Botic wasn’t hit by the third game curse, and he led 2-1, with games on serve.
Game five - the Dutch forehand failed on the second of two break points, and Medvedev was in the home straight. 3-2 with serve to come.

Botic served at 2-4 and was down 15-40. He saved one break point, but Medvedev hit a backhand winner to achieve a double break and be serving for the match.

A forehand winner from Botic put Medvedev at 30-30, but the Russian replied with one of his own to give him match point.
He converted immediately to win 6-4 6-4 6-2.

2022 AO 3R - Cornet d Zidansek

Tamara Zidansek (29) (Slovenia) v Alizé Cornet (France)

Zidansek, semi finalist at Roland Garros last year, already achieved her best AO result by making the third round this year.
A win for Cornet would see her repeat her best performance in an AO - round of sixteen in 2009.
Until Naomi Osaka’s demise, Cornet’s win over third seed Garbiñe Muguruza was the biggest scalp of the tournament.

This was the first time Zidansek and Cornet had played each other.

Cornet served first, and a Zidansek forehand winner set up a break point. A forehand unforced error from Cornet gave Zidansek the break.
Cornet used the third break back point to even things at 1-1.
Zidansek broke to love, starting and ending the game with forehand winners.

Five out of five service breaks and Zidansek led 3-2. As the first player to hold serve, she increased the advantage to 4-2.
With backhand and forehand winners, and a Cornet double fault, Zidansek threatened to take a double break, but Cornet saved the two break points, and held serve for her first time in the match, trailing 3-4.

Zidansek served at 5-4 to win the set, and began with a backhand error. After that it was smooth sailing, an ace sparking a run of points which sent her to first set glory 6-4.

No change of fortune for Cornet in set two - she was broken immediately, and once again in the fifth game.
Zidansek was nearing the finish line at 4-1 and 30-0, but three forehand errors and a double fault later, Cornet had renewed hope, having retrieved one of the breaks of serve. A love game followed to make it even closer at 3-4.

Zidansek, serving in the eighth game, had six game points, went to deuce eight times, saved two break points, but was victim to a Cornet backhand winner down the line on the third break point. 4-4.
A couple of unforced errors had Cornet down 15-30, but she lifted, and held serve, clinching it with another backhand winner. The last four games had been Cornet’s and she was one game away from levelling the match.

Serving to stay in the set, Zidansek delivered four unforced errors, and Cornet just watched the implosion, accepting the spoils. 6-4 and going to a decider.

Cornet held serve in the opening game of set three, which was a change from the other sets.
Then another roller coaster. Zidansek began with two forehand failures. Then three winners, two of them forehands. Two more forehand errors gave Cornet a break chance which was saved by a Zidansek forehand winner. Finally two unforced Zidansek errors gave up the game to Cornet who now led 2-0.

Zidansek fought back in yet another protracted game, where Cornet saved four break points. Zidansek converted a fifth with a forehand winner and it was 2-1 to Cornet.
Game four - from 30-0 Zidansek fell in a screaming heap of unforced errors to drop serve once more.
This time, Cornet capitalised, holding serve comfortably, sealing it with a pair of winners. 4-1.

Cornet saved a break point and held serve to lead 5-2.

At 2-5 and 40-15, Zidansek produced three unforced errors and faced match point. She saved it with a forehand winner. Another match point arrived when Zidansek was forced into error. A double fault finished the match.

Alizé Cornet won 4-6 6-4 6-2, and booked a place in the round of sixteen for the second time, 13 years since the first.

2022 AO 3R - Krejcikova d Ostapenko

Barbora Krejcikova (4) (Czech Republic) v Jelena Ostapenko (26) (Latvia)

Battle of two Roland Garros champions, Ostapenko (2017) and Krejcikova (2021).
Krejcikova’s AO main draw record before this year: second round losses in 2020 and 2021.
Ostapenko’s best AO efforts were third round appearances in 2017, 2018.

Ostapenko won two of the three previous meetings, but they were both in 2015, Krejcikova won the recent match - second round Dubai, 2021.
Ostapenko served first.
Both players were taken to deuce before holding serve in their opening games at the line. 1-1.

Ostapenko survived seven deuces and three break points to hold serve and lead 2-1. About twenty minutes for three games.
Krejcikova faced three break points after double faulting and receiving an Ostapenko backhand winner. The fourth seed could only save one, and Ostapenko broke for 3-1.
Consolidation followed, sealed with an ace.

Krejcikova, serving at 2-5 and 15-15, failed twice with her forehand, giving Ostapenko two set points. One saved with a service winner.
But Ostapenko won the set 6-2, when she pulled out a backhand winner.

In the fourth game of set two, Ostapenko hit four forehand winners, including one on the second of two break points, and she led 3-1.
Against the run of play, Krejcikova broke back immediately, and kept the match alive.

Dramatically Krejcikova broke again, to love, and she would serve for the set at 5-4.
The fourth seed raced through the game, the last two points a service winner and an ace, finishing the set 6-4.

Krejcikova broke the Ostapenko serve in the opening game of the decider, then saved a break point when serving the next game.
She led 2-0.
Krejcikova saved break back points in the fourth and eighth games, and led 5-3.
She served for the match at 5-4.

It took a few goes, but on the third match point Barbora Krejcikova won the contest 2-6 6-4 6-4.

2022 AO 3R - Azarenka d Svitolina

Victoria Azarenka (24) (Belarus) v Elina Svitolina (15) (Ukraine)

Now things would begin to be serious at the 2022 AO, with seeds clashing in third round matches.
Two time winner Azarenka against twice quarter finalist Svitolina (2018, 2019) promised to be one of the best, and so first up on Rod Laver Arena on Day Five was appropriate time and place for its manufacture and distribution.

Azarenka won all four previous battles with Svitolina. Two were in 2015, but the one most recently was March last year - quarters in Doha.

To reach the third round this year, Vika dismissed Panna Udvardy and Jil Teichmann, surrendering a total of just seven games en route.
Elina found it a touch harder, taken to a second set tie break in knocking out Fiona Ferro, and dropping a set against Harmony Tan.

Svitolina served first, and in a scrappy opening game, neither player earned any plaudits.
Svitolina double faulted on the third break point faced.
Azarenka double faulted in game two, but it didn’t matter, as she’d already hit three winners. 2-0.
Two winners were insufficient for Svitolina to cover up her inconsistencies, and Azarenka converted a break point in game three with a forehand down the line winner.

A love game from Belarus, and Svitolina had yet to introduce herself to the contest.
Azarenka continued to plunder, and from 30-30 in game five, Svitolina double faulted. Azarenka then hit a forehand winner, extending her lead to 5-0.

After serving out the set 6-0, three Azarenka backhand winners helped her to break Svitolina in the opening game of set two.
Some aces were introduced to the Azarenka pleasure, and she consolidated for 2-0.

From nowhere Svitolina found a love game, and she finally put a score on the board.
In the next game, the fifteenth seed concocted a break point, but saw it disappear with an unforced error.
Azarenka held on and led 3-1.
Svitolina, serving at 2-4, was broken to love, the game ending with an Azarenka backhand lob winner.

In a long long game serving for the match, Azarenka saved two break points, and Svitolina saved five match points.
The sixth match point was the one that did it and Victoria Azarenka won through to the round of sixteen 6-0 6-2.
The promise of a good match was broken, although Svitolina did compete for some of set two.
